Workplace Harassment Training: More Than a Checkbox

Four Alternatives to Annual Performance Reviews

Several years ago, one of our clients found themselves facing a workplace harassment claim.

Fortunately, they had records showing that their employees had completed harassment prevention training. When questions arose about what the organization had done to prevent harassment and educate its employees, they weren't relying on memory or good intentions. They had documentation.

That training record became an important part of demonstrating the steps the organization had taken to prevent harassment in the workplace.

It's a good reminder of something that's easy to forget when harassment training comes around each year: It's more than a box to check.

Prevention Comes First

The most important reason for harassment prevention training has nothing to do with avoiding a lawsuit.

People deserve to come to work without being harassed. They should know what behavior is and isn't appropriate, what to do when something happens, and where they can go if they need help.

Employers play an important role in creating that kind of workplace.

Training gives employees a shared understanding of expectations and helps managers understand the additional responsibility they have when a concern is brought to them.

But there's a business side to this, too.

If a Complaint Happens, What Can You Show?

Most organizations would say they take workplace harassment seriously.

But if a complaint or claim is made, the question may become: What did you actually do to prevent it?

Did employees know the organization's policies? Were managers prepared to respond appropriately? Did employees know how to report a concern? Was required training completed?

And importantly, is there a record of it?

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recommends regular harassment prevention training alongside strong policies and accessible complaint procedures as part of an effective approach to preventing and addressing workplace harassment.

Taking those steps doesn't guarantee that a problem will never happen. It does mean you've done more than simply hope it won't.

The Requirements Aren't the Same Everywhere

This can get particularly tricky for employers with employees in multiple states.

Harassment prevention training requirements vary from state to state. Depending on where your employees work, you may encounter different requirements around who needs training, how often it needs to happen, what the training needs to cover, and how long it needs to be.

And when you're already juggling everything else that comes with managing employees, keeping track of those differences can be a lot.

That's why we've put together a Workplace Harassment Training Requirements by State chart to make it easier.

Use this resource to check the requirements that may apply to your employees, especially if your workforce crosses state lines.

Still Need to Complete Your 2026 Training?

With only a few months left in the year, now is a good time to check whether everyone who needs harassment prevention training has completed it.

Our Workplace Harassment and Abusive Conduct Prevention Course helps organizations provide employees with practical, accessible training while supporting their prevention efforts.

And here's a little something extra: When you download our free State-by-State Workplace Harassment Training Requirements Chart, you'll also receive an exclusive discount code for our Workplace Harassment Prevention Course, delivered straight to your inbox.

Workplace harassment training may be something you hope you never have to think about beyond completing it.

But if the day ever comes when you need to show the steps your organization has taken, you'll be glad you did.
